This title is part of a brand new series, Planning for the Early Years, edited by Jennie Lindon, which takes a fresh approach to planning by ensuring that children’s interests are at the heart of all plans.

Planning for the Early Years: Storytelling and storymaking is a lovely book packed with adaptable ideas that can be extended for older children, or more focused for the under threes. It focuses on the prime areas of learning, especially the development of early language, defined in the 2011 Tickell review of the EYFS as the foundations for all learning. It includes photos, examples, tips, and pre- and post activity advice.

This title will allow you to:

  • Plan for children’s individual stages of development through the use of adaptable and inclusive plans, and plans specifically for the birth-3s
  • Engage and motivate children to learn by planning around their interests
  • Include children with English as an Additional Language and Special Educational Needs through plans that take into consideration a variety of abilities.

Activities and ideas in Storytelling and storymaking include:

  • Learning about story boxes, props and sacks
  • Learning about rhymes and pick-and-mix stories
  • Telling stories with puppets and toys.

Reviews

"I found this book a wonderful combination of good practical ways of engaging children in storytelling with thorough knowledge of how to develop these vital skills in early years.  This book is full of good practice and immediate ways of putting into action storytelling and storymaking. This resource will develop and expand skills in planning for storytelling and storymaking with flexible, effective Early Years practitioners who revel in the process rather than the product of an activity. When I was a nursery teacher I wish this resource had been available!"

Anne Pitcher, a professional storyteller on the Scottish Storytelling Centre's Directory

"A very insightful book. The students particularly like the 'time for you to think' as this does do as it states. We spent alot of time using reflection & it proved useful"

Naomi Whale, Childcare Lecturer, Bath College
